'Absolute Truth' (washingtonpost.com)
A couple of members of the Progressive Christian Bloggers Network whose blogs I love, like Ichthus and Faithforward blogged this article with a funny chart comparing Christ and Tom Delay. Tom Delay is someone who I've always found particularly unpalatable and got quite a giggle from the chart.
Yet, as I was reading the Washington Post article that inspired the chart, I couldn't help actually feeling compassion for Delay. Demonstrating the sign of a good feature writer, Perl was able to show a complete picture of his subject, making me see that Delay is someone who is very much a flawed person with a great deal of personal angst. Not that I don't appreciate -- and indeed as someone on Medicaid and Food Stamps personally feel -- the great harm the legislation that Delay has pushed through is causing.
But I can't ignore the hurting human being he clearly is.

Hi Michelle. I appreciate your display of compassion. I tend to be more cynical at times and you are encouragement toward more charity. Thanks.
Well, there is certainly plenty of room for cynicism these days. It's hard not to be cynical, and indeed, for me, really freekin' pissed off with what's going on. At this very moment I'm in a lot of pain because I can't afford a medication that Medicaid won't cover. Medicaid that Tom DeLay is trying to *cut*.
But, I guess it's in looking at the humanity of those who are causing suffering that we have the best chance of overcoming that suffering.
Though, that chart was wickedly funny. ;)
